Mission in Mourning

A Giveaway!

My baby is not really my personal guardian angel.  I know that images of cherubim are cute and the idea can be very healing for some, but the idea that my baby has to somehow continue to work for me does not sit well in my heart.

The Bible tells me that the people of heaven are very different than the angels of heaven, and my baby most certainly is a person in heaven, rather than an angel.

Yet, even with these truths, the images of sweet naked little babies with halos are one of the only symbols that our society permits us to actually hold onto as we grieve and acknowledge the reality of our children who have died and entered Heaven.

My baby’s work is finished.

I am the one still here.

I still have a responsibility to partner with God – to let Him lead me, and to obediantly follow.

Many loss parents feel this calling.  We know that we are the only ones who will speak on behalf of our deceased children – we are the only ones who will validate their very real lives and speak of the meaning they have moved in our hearts (whether we utilize the very few symbols we are permitted to use, such as angels, or not).

We are, in short, missionaries, proclaiming the truth, proclaiming their truth, to the world.

Let us encourage one another, as missionaries not only for God, but for our children.

Below are 100 mission mottos (borrowed from Harvest Ministry).  Choose the one that best speaks to your journey in grief and your path to healing.  Leave a comment below, including the number of the motto you most align with, and why.

Stillbirthday has a sessions group, that covers an important aspect of life after loss for 3 month segments.  You can learn more about our sessions group, and find the link to join, by visiting stillbirthday’s Facebook page.  The segment we are covering in our group from the beginning of April until the end of June is on the subject of God (You can also learn a little more about God’s involvement in pregnancy and infant loss by visiting our devotionals section).  At the closing of this session, at the end of June, I will draw a random person who has left a comment below as the winner of our giveaway, which is a VERY special package generously provided by Sufficient Grace Ministries (please enter a valid email address, and look for the winner to be announced at our Facebook page on July 1).

The Comfort Bear and Dreams of You Book will be treasured by the giveaway winner.

Sufficient Grace Ministries for Women (and families) is a 501 (c) 3 non-profit organization founded in 2004 by Kelly Gerken to offer bereavement products and support to families who have lost a baby due to miscarriage, stillbirth, or infant death. SGM also offers hospital education, seminars, speaking, and music outreaches…as well as encouragement on their blog and quarterly newsletter offering biblically based articles relevant to today’s women and families.  Their mission is to offer the same comfort and hope that they received from the Lord as their family walked through the grief they experienced after losing their three children.  Also find Sufficient Grace Ministries on Facebook.

  1. Heidi, What a great idea…

There were so many great quotes here, but the one that kept ringing in my mind was no.3. “Anywhere provided it be forward.” – David Livingstone

As I’ve walked- and am still walking- with this mother’s grief, I am aware that as long as I am moving forward in my Father, in His will, I am moving exactly where I should be. Allowing my grief to paralyze me- emotionally or spiritually- defeats the purpose my Lord has for me in this experience and is a poor memorial for my babies. God be praised always- Though He slay me… I move forward to honor my babies and my God. Where He leads is his business…

    Love to all,

    Angie

  2. Kristin Young says:

    Heidi,

I often get the same responce about my little ones in heaven being “angel” and watching out for us. I have always had the same feeling. They are people, made in the likeness and image of Christ! Far better. I know He has a plan for each life and that plan is still being carried out in the kingdom of God!
I chose #12 God isn’t looking for people of great faith, but for individuals ready to follow Him. – Hudson Taylor
I never believed myself to be strong enough or of faith great enough to walk this journey, but I trust God and will follow where He leads me.

  3. Wow. This was so touching. Thank you for sharing these beautiful verses/quotes/devotionals – I will have to find some time to participate in the facebook discussions. I think I will also start a 100 day photography challenge based on everything in this blog post. You are so inspirational, thank you!! What you are doing is so nice, and what a neat giveaway idea!

  4. Number 29, because every day is a sacrifice and a labor of love.

  5. Kasheca Istre says:

    44. Life is either a daring adventure, or nothing! – Helen Keller

  6. cassie demars says:

    Love love love

  7. I chose 29. too. “If Jesus Christ be God and died for me, then no sacrifice can be too great for me to make for Him. – C.T. Studd” It was when I chose to obey that I lost two sets of twins. Sometimes it was difficult to grasp that idea, that I nearly died in both pregnancies and my babies DID die, and all because I trusted, obeyed, and sacrificed. Yet here, I am again, joyfully trusting and obeying, and praying that God blesses me in sacrifice.

  8. Melissa Hart says:

Number 28 speaks to me. Even after two years, I’m still not ready to tell our story to the world. All of you who post, host sharing/q&a sessions, etc are my heros. I love and appreciate you all. I know G-d has a plan for me. I walk His path as best I can every day. That’s all I can do… Thank you.

  9. mdemaris says:

    35. If you don’t have a definite call to stay here, you are called to go. – Keith Green

I lost 3 babies in 4 (2 pregnancies) months time….. I am blessed with 3 living…….No one( except my husband and a special lady) knows about the second one….. After the first one everyone kept telling me to just move on……I do not think I have it in me to tell any stories about any of my babies who are not with us on this earth……I just keep telling myself. In His Time.

  10. finleysmummymel says:

    79. The light that shines farthest shines brightest nearest home. – C. T. Studd
In the almost three years since Finley was born I have found my light which in itself was very healing. My light has been hiding and conciously hidden by me for a long long time. Finley helped me find it, and decide that life was too short not to show it. I shine it far and wide, but much of my work in Finley’s name is done locally. It is there that my light and his burn brightly together.

  11. at first I thought 35 was right…until I read 98
    98. You can’t take it with you, but you can send it on ahead. – Oswald J. Smith
The only thing that helps when I feel sad about Emma is the belief that some day I will see her again and she will know me.

  12. 56. Oh, that I could spend every moment of my life to God’s glory! – David Brainerd
If my healing and her life and death can meen anything for His glory I willingly give it all for His use. for my life is not for me to live ,But for Him to live through me

  13. I chose number 79 too.. The light that shines farthest shines brightest nearest home. – C. T. Studd..Our baby Summer was born and went to be with the Lord on July 4th 2010 and the saying “She was the light of our lives Now she lights up the Heavens” holds so true to my Heart..so when I saw # 79 I knew this was the one for me.
